[ubuntu] Nvidia Driver Random Freeze

13 02 2011

After my recent update (7th Feb 2011), I have been facing issues with Ubuntu Lucid (10.04), where it randomly does one (or all) of the below:

  • display goes ‘fuzzy’ or ‘freezes’,
  • the mouse can still move for a while at least.
  • mouse freeze
  • keyboard does not respond

If i am patient enough, I can wait and everything should be fine in 30 seconds. Sometimes if i am lucky, i get to use my system for 5 minutes before the whole thing repeats itself. Irritating, isn’t it?

Well…. i do have low tolerance for this kind of issues, it is unacceptable in so many levels, right? Thus, i went around surfing the net for a solution, and i have tried the below but it does not help:

  • update / upgrade everything that is possible
  • reinstall the Nvidia drivers
  • install the latest Nvidia driver
  • change Nvidia driver & preferences
  • upgrade to Ubuntu Maverick (10.10)
  • modify codes related to the my USB keyboard and mouse
  • disable display effects: smooth fonts, visual effects… etc

After many re-installations of Ubuntu Maverick and trying out settings above, I am finally convince that the whole shebang is due to the Nvidia drivers and Xorg incompatibility. In the end i just did the simplest thing possible: DISABLE THE NVIDIA DRIVER

  • System > Administration > Additional Drivers (Restricted Drivers)
  • Click on the activated Nvidia driver
  • Click on the ‘remove’ button towards the right bottom

Yes, it will disable all the fancy visual effects, but i get a stable system that does not randomly hang for the last 24 hours. And it isĀ  better for me this way, at least. That’s my take.

[ubuntu] Lucid Lynx, 10.04 Cisco VPN

28 05 2010

For those who recently upgraded to Lucid Lynx, and the vpn client seems to have broken when and you get the error below:

Starting /opt/cisco-vpnclient/bin/vpnclient: insmod: error inserting ‘/lib/modules/2.6.32-22-generic/CiscoVPN/cisco_ipsec.ko’: -1 Invalid module format
Failed (insmod)

The solution is rather simple, you just need to uninstall your vpn client and reinstall it again instead of install over the old version. Simple and effective to me šŸ˜€

For those who is trying to get the Cisco VPN up and running, head to this page and read all about how to do it.

[ubuntu] Slow Wireless after Upgrading to 10.04

4 05 2010

I have recently upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 a.k.a. Lucid Lynx, and have notice a significant drop in wireless speed. After dabbling about for a while and doing some google search, I have come to the answer šŸ˜›

Just run the command below and restart, and all should be well:

sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic

update [8th May 2010]: the latest update from Ubuntu has this by default. A quick update should solve the problem šŸ˜€

update[10th May 2010]: If you face problem with your wireless connection keeps dropping, and unable to connect back, please refer to my other blog post

BTW, if you have a CD/DVD in the CD/DVD drive, please remove it then restart. Else you might see the ksoftirqd/0 process hogging nearly 100% of your CPU.

Please refer to [ubuntu] Lucid Lynx Wireless Keep DroppingĀ (updated) for more updates. I will be updating the post as i find out more solution on the issue.
